Finals Day Wrap

Baluwater CC crowned as 2015 Cup Winners

Baluwater CC of Nepal were crowned as Cup Winners at the 8th Thailand International Cricket Sixes as they overcame Mariners CC of Singapore in the premier final. It was a fitting climax to the ACST event organised in conjunction with Southerners of Bangkok. Sonu Tamang was awarded the man of the match award in the final.

The semi-finals had seen Baluwater defeat another debutant side, Marudhar CC of India while Mariners unseated the 2014 Cup champions Lanka Masters.

The second tier Bowl was lifted by Asia United who defeated host club Southerners in a Bangkok derby. The teams had reached the final by defeating Jaisimha Lions and Beer Battered Seadogs respectively. Zia of Asia United, took the player in the final accolade with a fine innings.

The honours in the Plate went to Hong Kong’s Lamma CC who were victorious against the challenge put up by the CBBs to take the third grade, with Dave Ziehlke being adjudged to be the player of the final before rushing over the freeway to catch a flight home. The finalists had earlier put pay to the hopes of Falcon of the UAE and Shanghai Hot Dogs.

The prestigious Spirit of Cricket Award, which forms an important quality of all ACST events went to the Malaysian performer, Joe Nusantara of the CBBs.

Sri Lankan star Oshadha Warnapura of Mariners was named as Player of the Tournament following some excellent performances over the three days of the tournament.

An emotional and proud ACST Chairman Michael ‘Cat’ Maher was delighted at how the event had panned out. “It has been a superb three days once again here at the magnificent Harrow International School, who we thank as ever, along with Southerners Cricket Club”, said Mr Maher. “Everyone has been made most welcome by our new partner hotel, The Windsor Suites, and the cricket has been excellent and played in the right spirit. It’s also been a real pleasure to have such a diversity of wonderful people at an ACST event”, he added.

Day 2 Wrap

Brilliant Bulawater Light up Day Two

The middle day of the tournament saw teams finishing the first round before being placed into Cup, Bowl and Plate divisions to play for honours as proceedings advanced.

Top honours went to Bulawater CC who are the first Nepalise side to take the field in an ACST event. The Kathmandu outfit are being led by Sher Lama who has represented Hong Kong in ODI cricket before returning to his homeland to help build the game as the country recovers from the terrible earthquake earlier this year. The team defeated Falcon, Shanghai Hot Dogs, scoring 100 runs in the process to end in second position after the first round, followed by a win over the Beer Battered Seadogs in the day’s final game at the beginning of round two.

The Yorkshiremen pulled off a dramatic win against a Jaisimha Lions side who had earlier inflicted defeat upon the CBB’s. Last year’s Cup winners Lanka Masters thrashed the CBBs to end round one in pole position, before getting off to a winning start in round two by beating the Lions.

Mariners CC had a mixed day with an opening match win over the hosts Southerners before falling to Marudhar CC. Southerners regrouped after their set back to comprehensively beat the Hong Kong Lamma CC team.

ACST Director Brad Tarr was a happy man as he watched proceedings while umpiring the games. “To have teams from nine different countries as well as participants from the USA, Malaysia and Thailand is fantastic as they play the game properly and in the correct spirit as well as all mixing off the pitch.”

Another milestone was reached on Saturday as commentary was given at the ground in English and Indian by Sudhir Tyagi, who broadcasts IPL games in India.

Participants met for a social event at the tournament hotel, the Windsor Suites Hotel on Sukhumvit 20 on Saturday evening.

Day 1 Wrap

Lanka Masters Start their Title Defence in Style

The 8th Thailand International Cricket Sixes got underway on Friday lunchtime and the reigning Cup winners from 2015, the Lanka Masters showed that they meant business on their return with two magnificent victories as debutant Indian side Jaisimha Lions were seen off before Yorkshire’s Beer Battered Seadogs were dispatched.

Once again the stunning surrounds of the Harrow International School proved the perfect backdrop to many returning competitors, along with several new sides who have given this year’s events a truly international feel, playing out some scintillating cricket at the event organised by the Asian Cricket Sixes Tour in conjunction with the Southerners Cricket Club of Bangkok.

Another team appearing for the first time Marudhar CC of India had two fine wins to boost morale over Southerners and Lamma CC of Hong Kong.

For the first time ever the ACST welcomed a team from Nepal to a tournament, and they did their country proud with a resounding victory in chasing down the 58 set by local side Asia United with their Cricket Association of Thailand line up.

United bounced back to beat Shanghai Hot Dogs, who then in turn turned on the style to defeat Falcon of the UAE in the final game of the day. Other highlights saw a win for the CBBs over the Seadogs and Mariners CC of Singapore who once again showed what a fine side they are at the sixes, as Lamma were put to the sword.

ACST Tournament Director Ian Liddell was a happy man following the days play. “It’s always good when new teams fit in so quickly to the tournament and see their contentment with the facilities and engage into our Friendships through Cricket ethos.”

Following play all competitors were welcomed by ACST Patron Steve Hatherall for their traditional barbeque and hog roast at Jungle Jims & Moonshine Bar.
